On their World Day. The Working Group calls for the protection of Palestinian journalists

London – The Working Group

Today, September 26, marks the International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian Journalists. On this occasion, the Working Group for Palestinians in Syria extends its highest appreciation to all Palestinian journalists and media workers, especially those in the Gaza Strip and the occupied territories, who have continued to fulfill their professional duties despite the risks, obstacles, and ongoing assaults against them.

The working group emphasizes that what is happening in Gaza, with the targeting of journalists by the occupying forces, is unprecedented in history—neither during the two World Wars, nor during the wars in Vietnam, Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan, where such a large number of journalists were killed in a short period of time. The conflict has never been this deadly for those working in the field of media.

On this day, the working group indicates that it has documented the names and details of (18) Palestinian journalists with various specializations, whether academics or volunteers, who sometimes combined more than one role, such as "development, relief, and media." They lost their lives in various areas in Syria while covering the events since March 2011.

While the working group confirmed that the facts on the ground indicate that the number is  much larger than that, due to the circumstances surrounding the arrest process or the announcement of death or the difficulty in accessing official records, in addition to the responsibilities that fall on the families of the victims, most of whom died as a result of enforced disappearance and torture to death, bombing, and clashes.

On the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian Journalist, which was established by the International Federation of Journalists on September 26, 1996: The working group calls for   providing a safe environment for journalistic work in all of Gaza, the occupied territories, and Syria, and for the protection of journalists, reaffirming its attitude against the restrictions on journalistic work.

International human rights organizations, led by the United Nations Human Rights Council, urge the Syrian authorities to release all detained journalists who have committed no crime or offense other than exercising their media work, which is guaranteed by international and humanitarian laws and norms.

It calls on the international community to take urgent action and immediate steps to stop violations of international law, provide protection for journalists and other civilians, and work to pursue and question anyone suspected of committing serious violations of international law, as a fundamental legal duty that falls on every state party in the Fourth Geneva Convention.

It emphasizes the importance of the role that journalists play in highlighting humanitarian issues and human rights, expressing appreciation for their courage and determination to fulfill their professional duties despite all challenges.
