Activists from Palestinian refugees in Syria in Lebanon demanded the Director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Dorothy Klaus.
Reconsidering its decision to cut aid to a specific group of Palestinian Syrian refugees residing in Lebanon.
Activists explained that the decision included Syrian women married to Syrian Palestinians, which deprived them of basic support amid the economic crisis the country is experiencing.
In a letter addressed to the Director of UNRWA, (Dorothy Klaus), the activists expressed their discontent with the decision, which they described as "unjust," pointing out that these women are now without any support, neither from UNRWA nor from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. The activists added that the decision also included some Syrian-Palestinian families, under the pretext that they receive assistance from the United Nations Commission.
Activists confirmed that they conducted investigations in other regions and found that the decision to cut off aid is supposed to apply only to those receiving assistance from another source, while many affected families in Lebanon do not receive any additional support, contrary to what was said. They pointed out that the Commission confirmed to them that inpiduals not registered to receive aid from it should continue to receive assistance from "UNRWA" since they are registered in its records.
Activists demanded that the UNRWA director verify the information by coordinating with the commission before making decisions to deprive any refugee of support, emphasizing that anyone receiving assistance from another source can have their aid cut off immediately.
UNRWA had suspended its cash assistance to a number of Palestinian families who fled from Syria to Lebanon, which include a Syrian mother or Palestinian women married to Syrian citizens, without prior notice by stopping the ATM cards and halting the cash assistance provided.
