The crisis of delayed aid in Lebanon. Neglect or humiliation?

Action Group| Lebanon

Syrian Palestinian refugees in Lebanon are suffering from an escalating living crisis due to the delay in the disbursement of their financial entitlements for a full month.

This delay comes amidst difficult economic conditions faced by the refugees, as many of them primarily rely on the aid provided by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

The agency justified this delay by citing a lack of funding, but this explanation was not enough to calm the anger of the refugees, who felt that the suffering they were experiencing due to this delay was recurring in a way that threatened their stability and dignity. This delay has doubled the economic pressures on many families, who are now facing difficulties in providing basic necessities such as food, medicine, and shelter.

In addition to UNRWA, the refugees also complained about the delay by the money transfer company OMT, which in turn delayed the disbursement of entitlements even after ten days had passed since they were issued by the agency, exacerbating the crisis and negatively impacting the mental health and living conditions of the refugees.

Syrian Palestinian activists have made urgent appeals to the agency and the remittance company to intervene and resolve the delay issue that significantly affects the lives of refugee families. They considered that what is happening is a violation of their basic human rights, including the right to live with dignity and to obtain the minimum necessary needs for life.

This crisis places UNRWA in a significant position of responsibility, as it is expected to provide radical and continuous solutions to support refugees in facing the difficult conditions they are experiencing, instead of resorting to repeated justifications that do not alleviate their ongoing suffering.
