The Commissioner-General of UNRWA issued a statement expressing his dismay at the decision of the Government of Sweden to stop funding UNRWA in 2025, saying that the decision is disappointing and comes at the worst possible time for Palestinian refugees.
The Commissioner-General said that the decision was taken just one day after the members of the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a resolution supporting UNRWA, noting that Sweden has been a reliable and long-standing partner to UNRWA, providing political and financial support for decades.
He expressed the sadness of Palestinian refugees over the decision, as it comes at a time when UNRWA is facing unprecedented political attacks, including disinformation campaigns aimed at depriving Palestinians of their refugee status.
The Commissioner pointed out that stopping funding for UNRWA now will undermine decades of Sweden’s investment in human development, including depriving hundreds of thousands of girls and boys in the region of their right to education, and will compound the ongoing suffering of the people of Gaza.
At the end of his statement, he called on Sweden to reconsider its decision and continue its long-standing solidarity by investing in political solutions and human development for Palestine refugees through UNRWA.
