Protest in front of the Palestinian embassy in Damascus

 Action Group | Damascus

This morning, the Palestinian embassy in Damascus witnessed a gathering of a number of Palestinian refugees who organized a protest in front of the embassy.

According to eyewitnesses, the protesters were harassed by inpiduals affiliated with the Fatah movement, who accused the participants of being linked to foreign agendas, especially Iran.

The sources reported that the protests, which came in rejection of a Palestinian delegation’s visit to Damascus, turned into verbal altercations and tension, which led to the arrest of a number of young Palestinians who expressed their rejection of the Palestinian Authority’s policies at home and abroad. Witnesses explained that “anyone who raises slogans opposing the Authority in front of the embassy faces arrest,” noting that five young men have been arrested and their fate is still unknown.

On the other hand, the protesters called on human rights and humanitarian organizations to intervene to follow up on the conditions of detainees near the embassy, shedding light on what they described as “unfair” practices against the Palestinian people in Syria.

In contrast, the Palestinian embassy in Damascus issued a statement confirming that the gathering that took place in front of it was in support of Palestinian legitimacy and the Palestine Liberation Organization, and to reject foreign interference in Palestinian affairs. The statement added that the participants sent a message to President Mahmoud Abbas and the Syrian leadership, in which they affirmed their commitment to supporting the Palestinian leadership and its positions seeking to neutralize the Palestinian camps from conflicts since the beginning of the Syrian crisis.

It is noteworthy that the Palestinian camps in Syria have been exposed to political and security pressures in recent years as a result of the Syrian crisis, which led to a pision in positions among the camp residents regarding the role of the Palestinian Authority and its policies in the region.
