The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced the arrest of Munther al-Jazairi, one of those involved in the Tadamon massacre that took place in the capital Damascus 12 years ago, which claimed the lives of dozens of civilians, most of whom were Palestinian refugees.
The arrest came as part of a large-scale security campaign launched by the General Security Forces to pursue those involved in war crimes and violations against civilians.
The Director of Damascus Security, Lieutenant Colonel Abdul Rahman al-Dabbagh, said in press statements:
“After monitoring and follow-up, we were able to arrest one of those responsible for the Tadamon massacre, in a step that comes as part of the security services’ efforts to hold the perpetrators accountable and achieve justice for the victims and their families.”
According to a statement by the Syrian Ministry of Interior, Munther al-Jazairi, who hails from the al-Zahra neighborhood, was arrested along with two other inpiduals, Sumer Muhammad al-Mahmoud and Imad Muhammad al-Mahmoud, who are also suspected of involvement in other crimes and violations.
Security sources confirmed that the campaign carried out by the Syrian authorities is still ongoing and aims to track down all inpiduals involved in the violations and massacres that the country witnessed during the years of Assad’s rule.
This step comes in light of the intensification of security efforts to combat crimes and violations, as the competent authorities launched security campaigns in several areas of the country in recent months, which resulted in the arrest of a number of wanted persons on charges related to terrorism and crimes against humanity.
The Tadamon massacre is one of the most horrific crimes that occurred during the Syrian revolution, as dozens of people were executed in the field in a neighborhood of the capital, Damascus. The massacre was later documented through video recordings that revealed its horrific details.
This massacre sparked widespread reactions, especially since it targeted civilians, including a large number of Palestinian refugees who sought refuge in Syria to escape the conflicts in their homeland.
The recent arrests reflect the Syrian government’s efforts to bring those responsible for the crimes to justice, amid human rights demands to hold accountable all those involved in war crimes and violations against civilians in recent years.
