Within the framework of the activities of the seminar entitled "Palestinians of Syria between the Present and the Future", organized by the European Palestinians Initiative for National Action, Fayez Abu Eid, Director of the Action Group for Palestinians of Syria, spoke about the difficult humanitarian and legal conditions experienced by Palestinian refugees in Syria since the outbreak of the Syrian revolution in 2011.
Abu Eid pointed out that the Action Group, a media and human rights organization founded in 2012 in London after a workshop attended by experts, media professionals and politicians, aims to monitor and document human rights violations suffered by Palestinian refugees in Syria, with a focus on the humanitarian, legal and living aspects resulting from the Syrian crisis.
Abu Eid added that the group prepares periodic media reports, builds a database of victims, detainees and missing persons, and collects evidence to submit human rights files for international accountability. It also shares its reports with the Human Rights Council and international organizations, and seeks to pressure decision-makers to shed light on the suffering of Palestinians in Syria.
Abu Eid revealed shocking statistics documenting the suffering of Palestinian refugees in Syria, as the number of Palestinian victims documented since 2011 until the beginning of November 2024 amounted to about 4,294 victims, in addition to more than 3,085 Palestinian detainees in Syrian prisons, including 127 women, and 643 Palestinian refugees who died under torture in Syrian prisons.
He pointed out that 533 Palestinian women were victims since the beginning of the confrontations in Syria, including 37 who died under torture, and 135 Palestinian refugees were executed in the field, including 16 who were executed by Syrian regime forces in the Al-Tadamon neighborhood.
Abu Eid explained that 91% of Palestinian families in Syria live in extreme poverty, and that 95% of Palestinians in Syria depend on cash assistance provided by UNRWA. UNRWA also identified 126,000 Palestinian refugees in Syria as extremely vulnerable.
Fayez Abu Eid stressed the need for continued international efforts to pressure decision-makers to improve the conditions of Palestinian refugees in Syria, and called for providing them with humanitarian and legal support, while emphasizing the importance of international accountability for the parties responsible for the violations to which they are subjected.
