Palestinian Syrians in Lebanon: Returning to Syria is not possible under current circumstances

Action Group | Lebanon

Palestinian refugees from Syria in Lebanon expressed deep concerns about the possibility of returning to Syria, citing significant legal and financial difficulties and the deterioration of basic services in both countries.
Refugees and activists confirmed to the Action Group’s correspondent that the widespread destruction of their homes, the lack of job opportunities, and limited access to basic services in Syria make return at this time impossible. They explained that families would face severe social and economic difficulties if they returned under these circumstances.
They also pointed to the financial and legal obstacles that prevent them from visiting Syria to assess their properties before deciding to return. They expressed concerns about legal documentation, restrictions on movement, and delays in the distribution of cash assistance in Lebanon.
Activists concluded that a safe and dignified return to Syria requires a radical improvement in living and security conditions there, and the provision of legal and economic guarantees that guarantee them a stable life.
They called on UNRWA to support them and overcome the legal and living obstacles that complicate their lives and increase their misery, but UNRWA had confirmed last week that it remains committed to supporting Palestine refugees from Syria within the limits of its available resources, and pointed to the significant financial constraints it faces.
In Syria, UNRWA continues to provide education, health care and humanitarian assistance to Palestine refugees from Syria, and the agency also calls for increased donor support to improve services and rehabilitate infrastructure. However, the extent of destruction remains significant, and funding for the rehabilitation of homes remains limited.
UNRWA adheres to the United Nations position that any return to Syria must be voluntary, safe and dignified. The Agency remains committed to providing basic services and advocating for the rights and well-being of Palestine refugees from Syria in both Lebanon and Syria. UNRWA will continue to work with the international community to mobilize support for Palestine refugees in both countries.
