After years of displacement… Palestinian refugees complain about the suspension of UNRWA support

Damascus – Action Group

Palestinian refugees displaced by the war in Syria are complaining about the continued decline in services and aid provided by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in several camps and areas. They are facing extremely difficult living conditions, particularly among families forcibly displaced during the years of conflict.

According to several refugees, UNRWA previously cut off their aid after they moved to areas outside the control of the Syrian government at the time. They indicated that they were treated based on their location, which resulted in them being deprived of their relief entitlements for extended periods.

Refugees assert that this situation has not improved significantly despite the changes in the Syrian landscape. They explained that after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, the agency only provided one-time financial assistance, without resuming the regular support programs that were in place before the war.

Testimonies from several displaced persons indicate that a large number of Palestinian families who have returned to their original camps are currently living in rented accommodation due to the lack of adequate housing support or rehabilitation programs. Meanwhile, other families are still living in tents and camps in northern Syria, suffering from a severe shortage of basic services.

Those affected express their fear that this situation will persist, given the absence of clear plans to reintegrate the displaced into UNRWA's relief and development programs. They believe that the Palestinian camps in Syria are now experiencing a state of accumulated neglect.

UNRWA has yet to issue an official response to these criticisms, while the displaced continue to demand a reassessment of the agency's policies and a guarantee that aid reaches all Palestinian refugees in Syria without discrimination.
