Action Group issues a situation assessment on the future of Palestinians in Syria Action

Action Group  | Syria

Action Group for Palestinians in Syria issued a report entitled “Palestinians in Syria under the Collapse of the Assad Regime,” which addressed the current situation of Palestinian refugees in Syria following the radical political transformations that the country has witnessed with the opposition forces taking control of most of the Syrian regions. The report indicates that the entry of the armed opposition into Damascus and taking control of most of the regions that were under the control of the Syrian regime represents a historic transformation that was not limited to the political scene in the country, but rather extended its impact to Palestinian refugees who have lived in Syria for decades. The report reviews the historical background of the presence of Palestinian refugees in Syria, where their journey began in 1948 after the Nakba, with the arrival of about 85,000 refugees. The country later witnessed additional waves of asylum as a result of regional conflicts, with the number reaching 564,691 registered refugees in 2013 according to UNRWA statistics, while the actual number is estimated at more than 650,000. During the years of conflict, Palestinian refugees suffered from tragic conditions that included killing, arrest and displacement, as more than 4,300 refugees lost their lives, and more than 3,000 others were arrested, including women and children. Camps such as Yarmouk and Handarat were also subjected to shelling and massive destruction, leading to large-scale displacement.
