The head of the new administration in Syria, Ahmad al-Sharaa, announced on Thursday the appointment of Ghiath Diab as oil minister, making him the first Palestinian to hold the position in the country’s history. The decision comes amid a severe oil resource shortage crisis facing Syria.
Ghiath Diab, who was born in Damascus to Palestinian origins, is the fourteenth minister in the new Syrian government, having been selected after the position had been vacant for more than a month. Diab holds a degree in petroleum engineering and has extensive experience in natural resource management, making him a prominent candidate to contribute to improving the Syrian oil sector.
Distinguished academic and professional career
Diab holds a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Damascus, and completed his postgraduate studies in energy and natural resource management abroad. He served as director of the Oil Exploration Department in Syria, where he demonstrated high proficiency in oil extraction and gas processing techniques, earning him a distinguished professional reputation.
Challenges await the new minister
The Syrian Ministry of Oil faces major challenges represented by a severe shortage of petroleum derivatives, requiring the new minister to develop innovative strategies to boost production and secure local needs.
Diab's appointment is seen as a qualitative step aimed at benefiting from new competencies capable of dealing with the current economic challenges, amid hopes that he will succeed in strengthening the Syrian oil sector despite the difficult circumstances.
