Palestinian Activists from Syria in Lebanon Direct Urgent Demands to UNRWA Director

Action Group | Lebanon

Palestinian activists and refugees from Syria currently in Lebanon have sent a written letter to Ms. Dorothee Klaus, Director of UNRWA, outlining a series of urgent demands aimed at improving their humanitarian and living conditions.

In their letter, the activists highlighted the major challenges facing refugees and stressed the need for an immediate response to the following demands:
    1.    Increase the shelter allowance: Raise the shelter assistance from $60 to $100 due to the continuous rise in housing rents.
    2.    Increase food aid: Raise food assistance from $25 to $40 in response to soaring food prices and the deprivation of children from basic necessities, including baby milk.
    3.    Accelerate aid disbursement: Expedite the distribution of winter and periodic aid within the current week due to worsening living conditions and the accumulation of refugee debts.
    4.    Address legal residency issues: Urgently coordinate with Lebanese General Security to facilitate refugee movement at checkpoints, given the ongoing difficulties related to legal residency.
    5.    Educational facilitation: Request that the UNRWA education official submit a letter to the Lebanese Minister of Education to exempt Palestinian students from Syria from providing a recent civil status extract and instead accept extracts from the previous year, as the Syrian embassy refuses to issue new documents for Syrian Palestinian refugees.
    6.    Residency exemption for students: Advocate for the exemption of baccalaureate and university students from legal residency requirements when sitting for exams and receiving certificates.

The activists concluded their letter by emphasizing the crucial role of UNRWA in alleviating the suffering of Palestinian refugees from Syria, urging the agency to prioritize their increasingly dire humanitarian situation.
