Sweden issues new report on the security situation in Syria

Action Group | Sweden

The Swedish Migration Agency announced the release of a comprehensive report assessing the current security situation in Syria, which will form the basis for its future policies regarding asylum and residency renewals for Syrians residing in Sweden.

The report indicated that the situation in Syria remains unstable, despite the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad's regime. The country is witnessing an escalation in local violence and security, political, and economic challenges that hinder the reconstruction process.

According to the report, the agency will update its mechanisms for assessing asylum applications and residency renewals for Syrians, taking into account inpidual cases and the regions from which applicants originate.

This follows a period of hiatus that lasted from the fall of the Syrian regime until March 10, 2025, during which the Swedish Migration Agency suspended processing Syrian applications.

The report explained that the initial assessment indicates continued instability in Syria, despite some relative improvements such as the abolition of compulsory military service, travel facilitation, and the return of some international airlines such as Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines to operating flights to Damascus. However, security and political challenges remain, including escalating sectarian violence, the proliferation of armed factions, and regional threats such as Israeli attacks.

The report also highlighted concerns about Hayat Tahrir al-Sham's control of the transitional government, raising questions about the potential return of authoritarian rule or religious extremism, particularly with regard to the rights of women and minorities.

Sweden is expected to issue its final decisions on asylum and residency issues for Syrians after a comprehensive EU assessment, which is expected to end the current suspension on these issues soon. Sweden will work to align its policy with European recommendations, taking into account the rapid developments on the ground in Syria.
