The Action Group for Palestinians of Syria condemns the arrest by US authorities of Palestinian-Syrian student Mahmoud Khalil, a permanent resident of the US and a graduate of Columbia University, and considers this action a blatant violation of fundamental freedoms and human rights.
Mahmoud Khalil's arrest, which came as a result of his peaceful student activism and defense of Palestinian rights, represents a dangerous escalation in the suppression of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly in a country that prides itself on this.
US President Donald Trump's threats and targeting of peaceful protesters for their support of the rights of the Palestinian people constitute a direct threat to democracy and the rule of law. This action will expose Mahmoud Khalil to deportation and the separation of his expectant family, and threatens students inside and outside universities with repression, detention, and possible deportation.
The Action Group declares its solidarity with the activist Mahmoud Khalil and joins its voice with human rights organizations and activists, and we demand the following:
- The immediate and unconditional release of Mahmoud Khalil.
- Stop targeting activists and peaceful protesters because of their political views.
- Protect the rights of immigrant students on American campuses and guarantee their right to peacefully express their opinions.
- Escalate the peaceful movement in the United States and abroad to support activist Mahmoud Khalil.
