Syria. UNRWA Commissioner: 40% of Palestinian refugees remain internally displaced

Syria – Action Group

The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, affirmed that the consequences of years of conflict in Syria continue to paint a harsh reality for Palestine refugees, noting that the cumulative humanitarian impact remains present in the details of their daily lives.

Lazzarini explained that camps such as Ein al-Tal, Yarmouk, and Daraa, which housed a third of Palestine refugees in Syria before the outbreak of the conflict, suffered widespread destruction, leading to mass displacement. More than 40% of the refugees are still living with the repercussions of this displacement today, amidst extreme poverty and high levels of food insecurity.

He added that UNRWA has intensified its efforts to restore a minimum level of basic services within the camps, including the rehabilitation of schools, clinics, and community centers, and the reception of increasing numbers of returnees, in addition to providing awareness sessions on the dangers of unexploded ordnance, which continues to threaten the lives of residents.

The Commissioner-General pointed out that the Agency continues its work "with and for" Palestine refugees in Syria despite the difficult circumstances, but that the chronic funding shortage poses a direct obstacle to expanding the scope of the humanitarian response.

He stressed the need to give the agency the necessary capabilities to ensure the provision of dignity and hope, and to support efforts to restore a minimum level of stability in the lives of refugees.
