PLO Committee Mandated to Follow Up on Debris Clearance in Yarmouk Camp

Sources close the Syrian government said local authorities in Damascus governorate reactivated the role of the municipality in Yarmouk Camp and signaled the go-ahead for the creation of a committee, affiliated with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), to oversee debris clearance in the camp.

Works to rehabilitate Yarmouk Camp are reportedly slated to kick-start between Thursday and Sunday, according to the same sources.

A decision issued by Syria’s Council of Ministers during its weekly session, held on November 11, mandated local authorities in Damascus to rehabilitate infrastructure and destroyed facilities in Yarmouk Camp so as to pave the way for the safe return of the displaced residents.

Activists slammed the decision, which they said overlooks Yarmouk’s geo-historical idiosyncrasy and denies its long-standing status as a refugee camp.
